Derek Chan ('10) taught each participant how to connect their OLPC to the internet using a USB modem and wireless router. Derek also taught the team about the Browse Application and had everyone check their email for the first task instructions.

The first task involved 4-groups of two building a fire, boiling water and recording the temperature change using a Temperature Probe. The group with the hottest pot of water within 30 minutes of the start time won the task.
After teaching the basic principals of lighting a fire, Mr. Parkinson taught the groups how to use the LabQuest Application and record data.

Once the task was over, Derek presented a lesson on the Journal and Write Applications and how to retrieve saved documents from a USB. Each group was handed a USB and told to open up the document saved on the USB. The groups separated and communicated their portion of the instructions to each other using the IRC Application. Eventually, the groups were able to commence their second task - the Great Egg Drop.
An Egg Drop Capsule |
In 2-groups of four, the teams constructed a capsule that contained two-eggs and would be dropped from 'the Wall' in the low ropes course. The teams both developed a similar system, whereby the egg was properly cushioned with padding and attached to a wide apple carton platform in order to slow the fall.

During the task the teams were asked to record the process with the FotoToon Application.
After the tasks were over, Derek ran seminars on the Memorize and Scratch Applications.
