It was a challenge to
get up early at 7 o’clock today, although we all went to bed at about ten last
night. After we had French toast and sausages for our breakfast, we headed to Subuiga Primary School, which was not far away from our camp. When we arrived the students seemed
very enthusiastic to see us. At around 10am we started our full day of teaching
primary students how to use OLPC computers.
Not surprisingly, these
students were very capable and they learned very quickly. In the morning we
introduced the students to a variety of applications including Speak, Record
me, Fototunes, Memorize and Scratch. After a while, these students were able to
play around with different programs without us guiding them. We had our lunch
at 12:30 and after we had finished eating, many of us joined in a game
with the students that was similar to dodge ball.
In the afternoon the
students were given the task to write a formal letter to thank their principal for
taking them to the District games the day beforehand. Their writing ability was
very impressive, but it was very interesting to see how quickly they learnt to
type after not having had much experience with the OLPCs previously. After arriving back at the camp in the late afternoon, Mr Denstedt, Nayyir, Justin and Mr Woodroffe took the opportunity to go on a game drive. They were very lucky as they managed to see a pride of lions and numerous other animals, including rhinos and a large male elephant. - Jonathan Zhu
